Business Minimalism | Human Soul

Minimalism is known as an artistic movement that originates after the Second World War in the early 1960s, which is identified by using as few elements as possible. Basically, the idea is to reduce the excess elements and use only the essentials.

Minimalism not only refers to an artistic avant-garde, it is also a philosophy, a way of thinking, even a work style that companies have adopted for the past 1 year, which has been given the name of “business minimalism”, whose purpose is to streamline work, have a better organization and reduce costs using the essentials and getting rid of surpluses.

There are companies that rely on minimalism to give order to their way of working, an example is the system on which Toyota workers rely to keep their places organized. The method they use is called “Las 5 S ”each S has a meaning in Japanese:

  • Seiri: Classification and discard
  • Seiton: Rational order of what is necessary
  • Seiso: Remove dirt
  • Seiketsu: Standardization
  • Shitsuke: Maintain discipline

How many times have we not seen a desk that has a computer, cell phone, candy, vase, more than 3 pens and a portrait holder anywhere in Mexico? At Toyota this scenario will never be a reality, employees should not have more than five items on their desks. The ideal is to have only: laptop, calendar, a pen, telephone or cell phone and a cup, to give an example.

This order strategy results in a cleaner workspace, as there are studies showing that being saturated with objects can affect the mood of workers, leading them to present symptoms of stress or even productivity.

Why should companies work under this philosophy? Here are some of the most important reasons:

Cost optimization

At this point the impact of this current is more evident. By using fewer elements and being more practical, the costs are obviously lower.

Use of space.

By disposing of furniture that is not even occupied, rather than being a decoration object, they turn out to be space thieves. Having a clear area is not only synonymous with cleanliness, it also transmits elegance and modernity.

Reduction of downtime

As the amount of leftover objects decreases, the tasks of locating and cleaning these elements are less. To do these activities, time is required, which can be used to work without stress or even to overtake slopes

Automation

With the advancement of technology, tasks are faster to perform, for example, data collection, information search, production processes, procedures, among others. The best examples are the smartphone and tablets.

Agile procedures

In relation to the previous point, technology not only optimizes the time to carry out contracts, but also the number of intermediaries, resources such as paper, ink and light to print, everything that has to be purchased, so it also optimizes expenses. We promote ecology, economy and agility to work.

Staff organization

Having a good work organization chart that defines and above all respects the tasks and functions of each worker reduces the risk of errors.
Changes are difficult to make being used to certain customs or elements that are part of our day-to-day work, however, as all processes must be carried out gradually without generate some disorder or conflict for the staff. Minimalism is a lifestyle that can give great benefits if the golden rule is respected: “less is more”.
